I’M STILL HERE!

My name is Tisha P. and I live in Alabama. I am a 40-year-old who was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 2. Back in those days there were no blood glucose monitors. They didn’t even prick your fingers. They had small pointed razor blades that made small slits on the end of your fingers. Boy that really hurt, especially to a 2 year old. My first glucose monitor was in a case the size of a lunchbox and cost $400.00. Boy I’m glad of the new ones! The diet was a lot different than now–as little carbs as possible.

My Mom had a tough time with me being so young and seeing me almost die twice before the age of 12. Now things are so much better for me. I have suffered some of the effects of long-term diabetes (kidney transplant in 1999 and vision problems) but I’m still here! I’m on the insulin pump so no more injections (YAY!) and I’m living my life to the fullest. I’m not going to let diabetes rule my life!!!
