My mother was diagnosed with diabetes nearly 20 years ago at age 66. This disease terrified her as her sister-in-law had already lost several toes and eventually her leg to diabetes. The Doctor explained that her diabetes could be controlled through diet and oral medication and did not require insulin, yet. If she continued with her current diet however, insulin and other health problems would result.

We never believed she could do it, but she totally changed her eating habits overnight! She went from a large size 18 down to a size 14. She faithfully monitors her blood sugar daily and watches what she eats. Even after a series of back operations that left her frail and forgetful, she still remembers to monitor her sugar and diet.

Its been nearly 20 years, she still controls her sugars with one pill a day and is recovering from the back surgery at age 86.
