Time To Take Care Of Me

If I don’t take care of me who will? That’s the question I had to face when my husband had to have surgery that proved to be life threatening.

It started last April when my husband came home sick with what we thought was the flu. Within 3 days he could hardly walk and was not eating or drinking. I got him to the hospital, they did x-rays and found out his diaphram had ruptured and his intestines and liver were up behind is lung and was actually strangling him.

The surgery didn’t go as expected. They were unable to lower his organs back into his stomach cavity and put him in a drug induced coma. He was in the hospital 6 weeks then into rehabilitation for another month before he came home.

Needless to say, I let my own health slip as I was too busy taking care of him. I ate at fast food restaurants not bothering to check my blood sugar regularly. I thought eating once a day and not watching what I was eating was okay.

Well, almost a year later I realized my blood sugar had to be high as some of the old symptoms started showing up. Thirsty, losing weight, and tired! I got out my meter and took my first reading in a year and wow!!!!!!!! It was running almost 400 again. I knew it was time to take care of me!

I have never been one to take medication. I had controlled my diabetes before with diet and exercise. I had it down to 140 to 150 before he got sick! I could do it again.

So now, I am back on a low carb diet, trying to exercise a little more each day, and putting my health back on the front burner.

I’ve been able to get my blood sugar back down to 200, but it’s taken a while. I’ve learned my lesson.

If I can’t take care of me, how can I take care of someone else?
